Its official, our contributing
writer has made a lifelong commitment to a life of
wedded bliss.
After dating the former Diana Fay
Nance for over a year, he asked her to marry him and
after she said, "yes," he slipped an engagement ring
on her finger. However, no date was set.
"We wanted to be wed on Valentine’s
Day and almost decided to be a part of the mass
wedding on the steps of the Bexar County Courthouse,"
Ramón said. "However, it was too impersonal and not
fair to our parents. Besides, we wanted to have a
church wedding."
Pastor Robert Campos of West Campus
Baptist Church gave the couple three dates – February
13, 20 or 27. Little Joe had agreed to be Ramón’s best
man. However, he was attending the Grammy Awards in
Los Angeles that same day. In fact, Ramón was also
scheduled to attend, but he considered marrying Diana
more important. So on Monday, February 7, they decided
to exchange their vows on Sunday.
Ramón quickly created e-mail
invitations, which he e-mailed that same night.
"By Tuesday afternoon, two
clubs/ballrooms offered me their facility free of
charge. I was also swamped by calls by bands and
mobile DJs who volunteered to perform free of charge.
Two radio disc jockeys also offered to emcee at the
reception," Ramón said.
"I was floored. I was overwhelmed
at the outpouring of love. I couldn’t believe so many
people cared so much as to insure we had a decent
wedding.
"Brandy López and Michael Arellano
donated the wedding cake. Abel Ayala and Tibisay Wong,
of "A Night to Remember" donated their video graphic
services and Madeline Lozano, of Latin Connection
Magazine filled in as still photographer. At West
Campus, everyone also went all out to decorate the
church.
"Thanks to Rick Reyes, Óscar Reyes
and Johnny "Aztlan" Hernández, we had the classy
Flamingo Club in which to hold the reception, where
music was provided by Latin Heat a.k.a. the Sunliner
Band.
"Joseph and Nancy Campos, who
purchased the bride’s dress and
numerous items, and I mean numerous, other items drove in
from the Rio Grande Valley to also help out as the
hair dressers and make-up artists.
"And as hard as we tried, we were
unable to find a tuxedo for Juan García, the bride’s
step-father. However, George Cantú of Latin Breed and
Robert Salinas came to the rescue and Juan was fitted
with the perfect size.
"On Saturday night, as Joseph, Juan
and I slept in a motel, the prospective bride and her
sister stayed up all night making the decorations for
the tables. Incidentally, both mothers also slept
through their ordeal.
"On Sunday, Joseph and all the
women shopped around for the remaining needed items
before they went to decorate the club
.
"I was amazed at how beautiful,
gorgeous and alert my wife looked after over 48 hours
without sleep and without even pausing to take a short
power nap. But then again, I have never ceased to be
amazed at her stamina.
"It was an emotional evening as my
boss and now my Best Man, La Prensa publisher
Tino Durán and Groomsman Rene Rene (Ornelas) stood
beside me.
"First Joseph Campos walked my
mother
, Rosalia,
and Diana’s mother, Amelia, down the aisle and up to
the altar where they lit two small candles, then to
their seats.
"Diana’s Brides Maid was her sister
Nancy and the Matron of Honor was her best friend
Cindy Martínez.
"I had to clear my throat several
times to keep from choking from the deep emotion I
felt as Juan walked Diana down the aisle.
"During the ceremony, Javier Galván
a.k.a. La Voz de Fama sang "Lagrimas de Alegria" as
Diana and I lit the Unity Candle.
"Three of my half-brothers – Frank,
Albert and Elias Álvarez – and one of my half-sisters,
Connie and her husband Robert Villanueva were present,
as well as three nieces, one nephew and half the
congregation when we exchanged vows.
"The sprinkling of friends I
managed to see from the corner of my eye was Mr. U (rriegas),
singer Virginia Lynch, Margo Urriegas, TV
personality/painter Evelyn Viegas, Mark Lambert, JoAnn
González and Mel "Maddawg" Durán of BNET radio.
"All but Evelyn and the
photographers went home, but the Flamingo Club was
filled with well-wishers as we walked in. And no
sooner had we walked in when the DJ played our song,
"Always and Forever." Needless to say, I had to fake
it by swaying back and forth because I don’t know how
to dance.
"Afterwards, Sunny Ozuna serenaded
Diana with "Mi Linda Esposa," a song he especially
wrote for his wife Janie. Then Rene Rene and I sang
‘Angelito’ and ‘Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero.’
Both my compadre Sunny, Rene
and their "always by their man’ wives, Janie and
Saundra, had just flown in from California where they
had performed before tens of thousands of people in an
‘oldies but goodies, concert/show so they had to leave
a little earlier.
"Kandi García, her son and her
mariachi followed with "Si Nos Dejan" and other
beautiful tunes. I felt bad for the band that couldn’t
get a note in as celebrity after celebrity wanted to
sing a special song for us. Although we didn’t stand
in front of Gilbert Rodríguez when he sang, we were
listening to him as we cut the cake.
"We were elated to see Eddie
Sandoval, Dr. Paul Ruiz and Nabor De León with their
beautiful classy wives, Yvonne, Margie and Sylvia; and
couples such as Ramiro Rodríguez with the lovely Cindy
Braun -- these plus a few stags such as Richard
Herrera. There was so much champagne that we were able
to give away several full bottles of the bubbly.
"Incidentally, Kandi García caught
the bouquet and Gilberto Rodríguez caught the garter
so they’ll be the next ones to get married.
"It was truly a magical night and
in closing Diana and I would like to again, thank
everyone that was there for us at such short notice.
May God bless everyone.
As everyone is aware, Ramon writes
most of the articles for this website but it took him
forever to get this info to us. I don't ever remember
anyone taking this long of a honeymoon. But then again
it is a rare and special event in itself when someone
in our industry fills the room with so many
celebrities for a private celebration. Ramon has
photographed almost all in the biz from Albums to Cd
covers to writing more stories than anyone I know for
many publications about our industry that he does not
realize He himself is considered a Celebrity.
